The Empire Style Decor
The Empire style is the last of the great French styles that widely influenced furniture design throughout the world. This style derived from the Neoclassical Style. Furniture and decoration accents designed in this period were inspired by the motifs discovered by Napoleon in the Empire campaigns that took him from Italy all the way to Egypt. Napoleon commissioned the greatest artists of Europe to create architecture and decoration that would equate the grandeur of Greece, the glory of Rome and the massiveness of Egypt. Empire style ornaments include motifs derived from Egyptian archeology. Falcon, sphinxes, cobras, obelisks, winged lions are just some of the empire style ornaments inspired in Egyptian decorations. Empire style decoration also includes motifs derived from ancient Greek and Roman design. Vases, lamps, torches, heads of Greek gods, ram's head and cornucopias are in the group of the Empire style ornaments as well. French Patriotism grew stronger during Napoleon's rule and it was evident in the many patriotically inspired empire style decoration pieces, which included ornaments such as laurel wreaths, eagles, swords, lances, drums and bugles. |
